Parents, do you want to improve your child's academic performance and help them achieve the best grade possible? Then read this blog to find out what to do and discover helpful tips for homework completion!
Homework is an important staple of education, but sometimes it can be a source of stress for students. There are many reasons that students may face problems with completing their homework. It may have to do with executive functioning difficulties, a lack of understanding subject concepts, or a misunderstanding of expectations.
Here’s the Tips that we’ll cover:
1. Stay Organized and Communicate.
2. Plan out your Time.
3. Break Down the Assignment or Project into Manageable Parts.
4. Prioritize Tasks.
5. Ask for Help When Needed.
1. Stay Organized and Communicate.
Parents can help encourage positive homework results for their child by helping to set good organizational and accountability habits. This especially includes implementing a system for the student to use a physical or digital planner as a daily homework log. Calendars are also highly useful as a readily accessible tool in the environment/work space. Set it up where the student can utilize it to visually double check and even have the option for it being a check off/check list/to do list. If a student is periodically confused about due dates, they may need to practice more communication. More correspondence with the teacher may help them acquire a clearer understanding of assignment or project expectations.
2. Plan out your Time.
When it comes to homework, time management is essential. Planning out homework time on a calendar and/or planner should be part of a daily routine. Non- school related tasks can also be listed on the calendar, such as non-curricular after school activities. This can help the student better organize their time towards homework completion. This is because they can more easily and holistically look at their whole schedule for the day, each day.
3. Break down the Assignment or Project into Manageable Parts.
Large projects, long essays, or intense assignments can feel overwhelming. Instead of looking at the entire task all at once, break it down into smaller and more manageable chunks. If needed, our tutors can help with this. For example, if you have a six page essay, you could plan ahead of time to complete two pages a day. Breaking your work into steps while pairing the process with good time management skills helps students achieve their goals. This should allow for a sense of accomplishment as the student works in steps along the way to full completion. It's also a good idea to finish the last parts of the assignment well before the due date to give a 'buffer zone'. We all know how unpredictable life can be.
4. Prioritize Tasks.
Remember that not all homework is created equal. Pay close attention to due dates. Some assignments may be due sooner, while others may have a higher level of difficulty that requires extra time. Often, tackling the most urgent or challenging tasks first helps prevent procrastination and reduces stress. A Top Spot Tutor can help you or your child discover a system for determining how to prioritize assignments. You may want to add visual markers to the calendar or planner that helps determine the order of task completion.
