Online Tutoring is becoming more and more popular.  It's a great way for students to receive extra support at home via online sessions.  You can carefully select an individual tutor that meets your needs.  The creative and technological tools that are available these days to enhance learning and engagement are also beneficial to the process.  Top Spot Tutors has an integrated platform that allows for digital white board use, document camera support, educational graphics, and screen sharing.  You don't have to waste time and gas money traveling to a learning center or in-person tutoring location.  In this article, we will be exploring ways in which parents that take advantage of this type of service can help support their child.  Tutoring is definitely an investment.  However, knowledge is truly priceless.

Pre-Booking Preparations

1. Tutor Selection

Top Spot Tutors allows you to carefully select a tutor to meet your needs.  You can read tutor profiles, see the subjects that they teach, check their availability, and review their education/feedback/experience.

2. Communication with your Selected Tutor

Once you select a tutor, you could book right away.  However, it's often nice to message your tutor first in case there may be anything that you'd like to double check before scheduling.  For instance, you may need to check that your tutor can assist you with learning a specific computer program, subject specialty, or test preparation.  Additionally, make sure to be aware of any supplies that you may be required to have on hand during the session.  You may want to verify that your selected instructor can tailor the session to meet specific accommodations or your child's individual learning approaches.  Would you like the tutor to assign homework for your child to work on in between sessions?  Let the instructor know.  Good communication can be key for a successful start.

3. Get a Clear Plan Formulated for your First Session

Make sure to communicate to your tutor about which learning level your child should be starting at.  It varies whether children are learning at grade level, below, or above grade level.  So, this information can be very helpful for your tutor to know ahead of time.  If you're not sure about your child's current learning/grade level, that's okay.  You may want to communicate that to your tutor.  Maybe the first session will be about the tutor checking your child's current educational level.

4. Awareness of your Selected Tutor's Cancellation Policy or Rescheduling Process

Life events can sometimes occur for any of us.  Make sure that you have an awareness of your selected tutor's cancellation policy.  Tutors invest their time in preparing the ideal session for your child and reserving a special spot for them on their calendar.  Most tutors require a specific amount of time in which refundable cancellations can occur.  Top Spot Tutors does have a function that allows for rescheduling of booked online sessions.

Pre-Session Preparations

1. Find a quiet space for your child to attend the session.

It's important that your child can attend an online tutoring session in a space that has a limited amount of distractions.  You want them to be able to focus on what the tutor is saying and respond in a timely manner.

1. Be ready to support your child with log in and technical support.

Although attending a session on the Top Spot Tutors platform is pretty straightforward, with technology, sometimes things 'just happen'.  If you can, it's best to be as prepared as possible and test things out ahead of time.  Make sure you have a stable internet connection.  Double check that the audio and camera on your device are working ahead of time.  Reload your browser or restart your computer if ever needed.

1. Gather all of the required supplies.

Are all of the supplies ready that your child will need during the session?  Some subjects may require more supplies than other subjects.  Your session may be all technological based and your child may only require the device to work on.  Either way, it's important to be prepared to have any required supplies on hand.

Post Session Tips

1. High Demand

Many online tutors are in high demand.  Make sure that you reserve your weekly spot ahead of time.  Top Spot Tutors allows you to toggle to an 'ongoing' payment schedule when you complete a booking.  This will help the instructor know to expect you each week and plan accordingly.

2. Encouragement

After a session, it's always great to take a look at what your child accomplished and provide positive verbal feedback.  This will help encourage them as they make progress in their learning.  If you or your child requested your tutor to assign homework, make sure to check in with your child on the completion of that work as the next tutoring session approaches.

3. Session Feedback

Although it's not required, we recommend that our tutors send feedback after each session.  This helps everyone stay on track with what has been completed and the achievements that your child is making in each session.  If you don't receive feedback, you may want to periodically check in with your child's tutor to inquire about your child's progress.

4. Provide a Review

If you choose, it can be helpful to write a review for a tutor.  When writing a review for your child's tutor, remember that you can be honest, thoughtful, and constructive in your feedback approach.
